Graphic organizers
Mind maps are just one resource to knowledge structuring, there are many
others that might be the best option sometimes. This site has a
comprehensive list of diagram types. Briefly descripted indeed, but at least you'll know they exist.
Concept mapping
While mind maps are hierarchical, concept maps are networks of
concepts. See

CMapTools for a
software and a good example (at the home page).
